DEXA Body Composition Scan
What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan, also known as dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), is a low-dose X-ray that measures bone mineral density (BMD). It can also provide information about lean mass, fat tissue and body composition.
Are DEXA scans safe?
DEXA scans are extremely safe. They use a much lower level of radiation than standard X-rays. In fact, you are exposed to more radiation in a cross-country flight than from a DEXA scan.
Who should get a DEXA scan?
Anyone curious about their body composition and bone density will find the information useful. The body composition information is especially useful for those who are on a health and fitness journey looking to get the most precise measurements of visceral fat, subcutaneous fat and muscle mass and lean body mass. In addition, we personally believe every patient on a GLP-1 or on a weight loss journey needs occasional DEXA scans to ensure the weight being loss is not negatively impacting muscle mass.
How Should I Dress for my DEXA scan?
Wear comfortable clothing, and avoid metal items like zippers, jewelry, and belts.
Does it matter if I eat or drink before my DEXA scan?
We advise to avoid excessive water intake right before the scan, and to avoid heavy meals a few hours before the scan. In addition, calcium supplements alter the accuracy of the DEXA scan and it is recommended to not take calcium supplements 24 hours prior to scan appointment.
What to expect during the DEXA Scan?
After arriving to our office, you are invited in to prepare by removing any metallic jewelry or accessories. Then you will remove your shoes, lay back on the bed of the scanner, and within 10 minutes the arm of the DEXA machine passes over your body while recording the results of your report.
How long will it take to receive my results?
Results will be available to you immediately following the scan and will be emailed to you as well.
How long do DEXA scans take?
Our scans take about 10 minutes. During the scan, you lay still in the scanner bed and results are available shortly after the test.
How often should I get a DEXA scan?
We recommend starting with a baseline scan and booking follow-up scans every 4 to 6 months based on your fitness goals. For those looking for the most accurate and consistent results, we do offer packages at a discounted rate.
What do I do after I get my results?
The answer to this question will be unique to each person's individual health and wellness goals. Many people will use our baseline report to begin, or modify, their training and diet plans. Some will take this an opportunity to engage with a dietician, nutritionist, or personal trainer to make the most of their efforts and time spent in the gym and planning their meals. The ultimate goal is to help guide you on your health, wellness and longevity journey.
